A Guide to Planning a Gym for Your Sports Club
At Apollo Fitness, we've spent years working with sports clubs across Ireland to create gyms around the athletes that use them. From local GAA clubs to academies and larger sporting organisations, we have worked with over 600 sports clubs throughout Ireland, to design, plan, equip and develop their gyms
That experience has shown us that creating a successful club gym involved much more than choosing equipment. The right space needs to work around the needs of the club, make the most of the available space, and provide a training environment that can support players now and as the club develops in the future.
Whether you're planning a brand new club gym, upgrading an existing facility, or looking to make better use of an underused space, this guide covers the key things to consider before you get started.
Start with your members
Before jumping straight into equipment, start with the people who will be using your space.
A club gym will often be used by many groups of different levels and abilities. A GAA club gym could be used by senior teams, underage players, coaches and individuals throughout the week. The requirements won't always be the same but the goal is to build a space that is versatile enough to work for everyone.
Consider which teams and age groups will use the gym? How many people will train at once? What sports will the facility need to support? Will it be used for strength and conditioning, general fitness, or both?
Understanding this first will give you a much clearer idea of what the gym should achieve.
Assess the space
The size of the room is only part of the equation.
Before selecting equipment, consider the practical characteristics of the space, such as ceiling height, access points, flooring, lighting and available storage.
It is also important to consider how your members will move through the gym. Equipment should be positioned so that there is sufficient space to train safely, while allowing different areas of the gym to operate at the same time.
One of the most important steps is to decide where everything will go. Our designers create a layout based on flow and zones, as well as club requirements. Common zones would include Strength (racks, benches, plates and free weights), Functional Training (open floor space, kettlebells, accessories), Conditioning (cardio and conditioning equipment such as airbikes, rowers, ski ergs).
The right layout will depend on the club, the space and the type of training taking place, so it is worth considering these elements together rather than individually.

Choose equipment around your needs
There is no single equipment list that works for every club.
The right selection will depend on the athletes using the gym, the available space, and the programmes being delivered.
For many clubs, versatile equipment can create the greatest value. Multifunctional pieces such as a rack with attachments, or the multi use leg curl combo can support a wide variety of movements and training enviornments.
A club might have hundreds of members, but that doesn't always mean they need hundreds of pieces of equipment. Instead we prioritise versatality and space efficiency.
Planning around realistic usage can help create a more efficient and functional training environment.
Think about the long-term value of your investment
A new gym is a significant investment for any sports club, so it is important to look beyond the initial purchase price.
Equipment that is used regularly bu multiple teams and athletes needs to be built to withstand the demands of a busy club environment. Quality, durability, and ongoing support can all have an impact on the long term value of the investment.
When comparing equipment consider:
1. Quality and Durability - Is it designed to withstand regular, high volume use?
2. Warranty - What level of cover is provided and for how long?
3. Servicing and Support - Who will look after the equipment if an issue arises?
4. Replacement Parts - Are parts included in the warranty, and are they readily available?
5. Total Cost Of Ownership - Will the equipment continue to provide value as the needs of the team evolve?
A cheaper piece of equipment isn't necessarily the better investment if it needs replacing sooner or is difficult to maintain. That's why we look at the quality, warranty, servicing and support alongside the initial cost, helping clubs choose solutions that offer value well past installation.

Plan your budget and funding
A successful gym starts with a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, and what the complete project will cost.
When setting your budget, look beyond the equipment itself. Depending on the space you may need to allow for flooring, storage, delivery and installation, or other changes to the room. With that being said there are solutions available for every budget, prioritisng the essentials can help clubs create a highly functional space while leaving scope to expand over time.
For sports clubs, funding and grants can play an important role in making facility improvements possible. The Community Sports Facilities Fund (CSFF), formerlt known as the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme, is the Government's primary funding scheme available for clubs.
Where funding is being considered, having a clear plan, equipment specification and project budget from the outset can help clubs understand what they need and make the most of the investment.
Work with the right partner
A successful club gym is about more than the equipment. Bringing the design, equipment, flooring, storage, and installation together from the start helps create a space that is pracitical, functional and built around the needs of the club.
At Apollo Fitness, we support sports clubs through the full project, from the initial consultation and space planning, to post install support, and every step in between.
